NEWS - STORE CURRENTLY CLOSED

March 20, 2026 - In the aftermath of a fire that devastated The Salvation Army Thrift Store at 1310 Dual Highway in Hagerstown, local nonprofits and community leaders are coming to the aid of The Salvation Army.

The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal is now investigating the cause of a March 13 fire that was believed to have started in the basement of the building. In addition to fire damage in the basement, the store area suffered smoke and water damage. Goods for sale in the store are lost, and the store cannot reopen at the present location until investigations and insurance inspections are wrapped up and necessary repairs completed. Total damage estimates are not yet available.

“It is a sad time for our community because the store was a destination for local shoppers, and we employ 25 individuals. Funds from the sales at the Thrift Store support our work with those in need, helping to provide emergency assistance, food, our Mana Soup Kitchen, Women’s and Children’s Family Shelter and our Red Shield Youth Center program for after-school students,” said Major Mark Van Meter, the commanding officer at The Salvation Army of Hagerstown.

In the days since the fire, Major Van Meter has met with local community leaders who have offered support to The Salvation Army during this time. The Goodwill Stores of Washington County has offered to assist in employment for those Salvation Army Thrift Store workers who are out of work following the store closing. Both Goodwill Industries and Brooke’s House have offered to assist with stocking a new store location with goods from their inventory. The Salvation Army of Hagerstown has also received offers of space for a temporary store location. They expect to open that location within the next few months.

“In every season, we are humbled by the love and support shown to The Salvation Army and the work we do,” said Major Van Meter. “Please pray for us as we trust that God is at work, even through this challenge, and that He will bring good from this difficult moment.”

The Salvation Army Thrift Store sales support $400,000 of the programs of The Salvation Army in Hagerstown. While the store cannot presently accept donations of clothing or household goods and furniture, donations can be made to P.O. Box 747, Hagerstown, MD  21741-0747.
